Dusty; age 4; 19” height; 38 pounds
Update 2/8/10 Dusty has gone through quite a metamorphosis. He started out so under weight & ill that he could not walk half a block without being exhausted. He was truly the picture of malnutrition, parasite infection & skin disease. Our first goal was to rid him of the internal parasites and put weight on him so that we could attempt to treat him for heartworms. This took about 2 months of slowly increasing his food intake and reducing the amount of feedings so that he could handle a normal portion of food in his stomach. At the same time we also picked off all the scabs that virtually laid in a layer under his coat. I must admit that it became a challenge to me - I was determined to rid this handsome boy of all that nastiness. I did this over a week with a pair of tweezers so that I did not pull out his hair, also his skin was very sensitive, bathing helped to release some of them from his skin - but gosh there was so much! Success of weight gain & parasite elimination brought us to the much needed HW treatment. We started a round of Doxy and monthly HW pills - once this was accomplished we were able to have our first treatment. Dusty was wonderful through all this man handling (knowing we were saving him I'm sure). He did fairly well through his first treatment with only the occasional throat clearing and of course his stamina was again down to maybe the first bush he came to, it does make them fairly week. After about 10 days we noticed his hair all around the outside of his crate, it seemed each and every day more and more fell out. His second treatment did not go as smooth, 2 weeks into his second treatment we had a set back, he collapsed on his potty walk. A quick trip to the vets gave us a diagnosis of pneumonia just beginning. More meds . Now his undercoat was totally gone with just a thin dried topcoat, my supplements not being able to keep up. But he seemed to be responding to the antibiotics and was able to receive his third and final HW treatment after 5 months in foster care. At around 10 days post treatment he had a dizzy spell, at first we thought it was because he was crated so much and weak, then he had another one, both happened when he got excited. He was due for a re-check and the afternoon before his appt he actually fell over and smacked his head before I could get to him. An astute vet sent us to a cardiologist and there we found out that Dusty was having pulmonary hypertension episodes. Believed - possibly to be from the heart still healing from the heartworms and causing the lung issue. YES of course - more meds (more dangerous meds). We are now about 3 weeks into these meds and HE IS GREAT! He has not had anymore episodes, he is still on activity restriction but not crated for more than 3 hrs total a day. We have had a phone consult with his vet and had permission to add a few more minutes to his walk. Dusty is due to visit the cardiologist this week coming for another ECO. Please keep your fingers crossed that Dusty will be listed on this website next week in search of his forever family; I would like a round of applause for this boy and his brave and gentlemanly way of dealing with this whole experience, every vet & vet tech he has met has fallen in love with him. |

SPARKS; Age 4; 46 lbs; 18” tall
Woof! Hi! My name is Sparks. We think I'm 4 years old, but you never know since I was rescued. I like to bark and run under the bushes or in the garden, but only cause I smell the critters who previously visited. I do walk well on the leash.! My foster Mom & sister think I'm a beautiful dog with a thick coat, expressive eyes and a great sense of smell.

Lexie Age 6, Height 14”; 32 lbs Hi, my name is Lexie and I’m currently waiting for my forever home. I’m very well behaved and know all my basic commands. I’m totally crate and housetrained. I love to play fetch and really enjoy a game of chase. My two foster sisters are great playmates but I lived most of my life as an only dog so I’m fine either way. My foster dad says that I’m a dainty little girl and such a good listener. I love attention but I’ll sit patiently by your side until you have the time. I bet you are waiting for my negative behaviors but my foster mom says that I really don’t have any. When I first arrived at my foster home I was a little worried about the stairs but I’m gaining confidence each day. I just needed to know where those things were going to take me. I also know several tricks which I will be happy to show you if decide you would like to meet me. |
